About the Presentation
The effort to create a sustainable future requires substantial learning, unlearning and relearning. People must not only understand the need for change but themselves engage in creating a working alternative future. The presenter has pursued this educational mission for more than forty years. In the past five years, he has moved beyond using Moodle or another LMS as a paperless hub for face-to-face teaching to teaching online two of his mainstay courses: World Sustainability and Environmental Psychology. Both have substantial experiential components and require group collaboration. Teaching is primarily asynchronous. This presentation will introduce both courses, their pedagogical design, their online structure and indications of learning outcomes. The potential for using this approach both in higher education and for global collaborative learning is discussed.
About the Presenter
Michael R. Edelstein, Ph.D. (SUNY Buffalo, Social Psychology, 1975) is Professor of Environmental Psychology in the Environmental and Sustainability programs at Ramapo College of New Jersey. His work focuses on the social and psychological impacts of environmental contamination and undesired environmental change and the steps needed to redirect toward a sustainable society. Books include Contaminated Communities: Coping with Residential Toxic Exposure, 2nd Edition (Westview 2004), the co-authored Radon’s Deadly Daughters: Science, Environmental Policy and the Politics of Risk (Rowman Littlefield, 1998), and the co-edited Cultures of Contamination: Legacies of Pollution in Russia and the United States (Elsevier 2007) and Disaster By Design: The Aral Sea and Its Lessons for Sustainability (Emerald, 2012). He is currently writing a book on World Sustainability. Dr. Edelstein has frequently been called upon to give his expert opinion in toxic tort litigation and environmental administrative hearings. Recent work has been on the community impacts of oil and gas development in Alberta, Canada, impacts to Native Americans and others from a restart of uranium mining in New Mexico and environmental justice impacts from reauthorizing the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant. Dr. Edelstein is founding president of Orange Environment, Inc., an organization that has spent more then thirty years protecting the integrity of place of the Orange County, New York region while promoting the sustainability of its communities.
